CONWAY — Eight graduating art students at the University of Central Arkansas will display their work at the annual Fall BA/BFA Senior Exhibit in the Baum Gallery of Fine Art from Nov. 6 to Dec. 4.
Opening receptions will be held on Thursday, Nov. 6 from 4-6 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 16 from 2-4 p.m.
The receptions and exhibition are free and open to the public.
“Two semesters before the senior exhibit, (Bachelor of Fine Arts) students submit a studio practicum proposal in which they propose an idea for a body of work they want to create for the senior exhibition,” said Dr. Jeff Young, associate professor and chair of the UCA Department of Art. “After their proposal is accepted, they participate in a series of group critiques with studio faculty and other students as they make work for the exhibit.”
“For (Bachelor of Arts) students, the process is different. They bring their best work, made during their final studio courses, to an interview with a faculty panel. During that interview, the faculty panel and the student discuss which works are the strongest and the faculty select the work to be exhibited.”
The exhibition will feature works by five BA undergraduates and three BFA undergraduates.
BA students participating are Clinton Brown, a Fine Art Emphasis; Jennifer Kay, an Art Education Emphasis; Melissa LaVone Meeks, a Fine Art Emphasis; John Steven Overturf, a Fine Art Emphasis; and Suyao Tian, a Fine Art Emphasis.
BFA students participating are Heather Condren, a Graphic Design Emphasis; Aryton Joseph Sawatzky, a Graphic Design Emphasis; and Qian Wang, a Graphic Design Emphasis.
The BA/BFA Senior Exhibition is a requirement for studio and art education majors to graduate.
“Work to be exhibited this semester will include sculpture, ceramics, mixed media, photography, painting, installation and graphic design,” Young said.
The exhibit gives students the opportunity to show their best work to the public and gain experience in a practical setting.
“For students, the Baum Gallery is a great place to see their work on display, and the senior show is the pinnacle of their work in the UCA Department of Art. We welcome everyone on campus to come see the work,” Young said.
