The Arkansas Horn Club will give a unique musical presentation at the Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall of the University of Central Arkansas at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 2, 2014. “A Saint Hubert Celebration” is open to the public at no charge.
The celebration will feature music and narrative to explore the story of Hubert and the inextricable link between “French” horns and the hunt, including solos and ensemble works. Musical selections for horn ensemble will include Rossini’s “Rendez-vous de Chasse;” a medley from von Weber’s opera “Der Freischütz;” Karl Stiegler’s “Saint Hubert Mass;” and Cherubini’s “Laughing and Singing.” Solo selections will include “En Forêt” by Bozza, performed by UCA music student Brenda Acosta; and “Hunter’s Moon” by Vinter performed by Brent Shires, UCA horn professor. The history of Saint Hubert will be recounted as well.
The second day of November is the official liturgical holiday celebrating the venerated patron saint of the hunt, Hubert. In some European and Québecois traditions, a Catholic mass is held with hunting horns in the church, followed by a blessing of hounds and guns.
The Arkansas Horn Club is led by Brent Shires and is made up of students, professionals and amateurs on the French horn. Anyone who enjoys playing the horn is welcome to join the group and its activities on a semi-monthly basis; the club meets on alternate Sunday evenings. Other events being planned by the club include “Hornaments”, which is an annual holiday caroling party by the horn ensemble in Little Rock. The Arkansas Horn Club is a local group of the International Horn Society.
