ANNUAL STUDENT ART COMPETITIVE COMING TO BAUM GALLERY

CONWAY — The University of Central Arkansas’s Annual Student Art Competitive will be on view at the Baum Gallery of Fine Art March 5-19, and students have until Feb. 20 to submit.

The exhibit is a campus-wide juried art competition with no media or stylistic guidelines. The works can range from traditional drawings and paintings to abstract multimedia pieces. While many art students submit each year, anyone interested is encouraged to participate.

“The entries from non-art majors have been increasing the past few years,” Baum Gallery Director Barclay McConnell said. “The creativity on this campus is impressive. The work of the art students really speaks highly of the UCA art faculty, but then we also get these wild cards who may be business majors who submit great work.”

Chief Curator of the Arkansas Arts Center Brian Lang will be the judge this year. The Baum Gallery collects and organizes submissions, and Lang will arrive March 3 to decide which works will be viewed in the exhibit. After the exhibition is outlined, Lang will then award selected works first, second or third place as well as best in show and an honorable mention.

The $1,000 in cash prizes will be divided among winners in varying amounts based on quality of work. There is no set amount for each place, and award amounts are decided by the judge. However, submissions are often bought by viewers and even judges.

The Baum Gallery exhibit is free and open to the public. The opening reception is March 5 from 4-6 p.m. in the Baum Gallery in McCastlain Hall. The gallery’s regular hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on Thursday.
