CONWAY—The University of Central Arkansas will host the Amigo Cup, the only statewide Latino soccer tournament aimed at encouraging Latinos youth to attend college. The tournament will take place Sunday, September 21, 2014. The competition kicks off at 9:00 a.m. at the UCA soccer field located on the corner of Donaghey Ave. and Dave Ward Dr. in Conway, Arkansas.
The tournament was established to promote cultural exchange and to connect the Latino community with the educational opportunities available at UCA.
“This tournament is great for our community because UCA is showing that it cares about the future of Latinos by providing an opportunity for a college education,” said Cesar Aguilar, director of the Northwest Arkansas soccer league. Authentic Hispanic food like traditional tacos de barbacoa and carne asada will be sold at the event along with aqua fresca and tropical fruit cups.
The UCA Office of Admissions will also be conducting tours of the campus for those interested in applying for university admission.
“Higher education is the key to success in this country,” said Manny Sepulveda, Hispanic Initiative Coordinator at UCA. “Latinos are now the largest ethnic minority in the United States. It’s imperative to educate the fastest growing population segment in our country to ensure the nation’s economic standing in today’s global markets.”
