CONWAY — The University of Central Arkansas Department of Writing will feature the AfterWords awards ceremony, honoring first-year Residential College writers, on Tuesday, Dec. 1.
The 4-6 p.m. event, free and open to the public at the Bear’s Dean, just off campus at 235 Farris Road, will feature student readings of the award-winning works, selected by faculty from the WRTG 1310, Introduction to College Writing course. Awards will be given for first, second, third and honorable mention from each residential college, as well as a reading award given on the day of the reading for the best read essay. Lacey Thacker of the UCA writing faculty will also read from her work.
“We are excited about what AfterWords offers first-year writers,” said Sophie Dix, interim director of first-year writing. “The competition allows students to celebrate their writing in a community of writers.”
Dango Kumwenda, an economics major from Malawi, was a winner last year.
“I was surprised to learn that I had been selected to receive an award for work in my writing class, but once I heard all the students reading their winning essays, I appreciated the diversity of types of writing being produced in first-year writing classes,” he said. “At the event itself, in the Bear’s Den, I really enjoyed being able to interact with so many different writers and hearing them read.”
AfterWords is funded by donations from the Department of Writing and the Residential College Program.
