The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Academic Leadership (CETAL), in collaboration with Student Success Services, is excited to continue the Faculty for Successful Students campaign. This initiative equips faculty with simple, practical strategies to support students in developing habits that foster their academic success–particularly among first-year students.
This year, the campaign will feature themes on a bi-weekly basis and align directly with the Successful Students campaign for UCA students. Each message will highlight the student-facing strategy and provide faculty-facing tips you can use in your classes. To reinforce these strategies, CETAL has also created a slide deck with one slide per topic that you can display at the beginning of class.
We invite you to explore the campaign website. You’ll find supporting materials, weekly themes, and slides to use with your students. By taking a few moments in class to reinforce these strategies, you help students build sustainable habits that can make a lasting impact on their academic journey. Together, we can encourage our students to take ownership of their learning and thrive at UCA.
This week’s Faculty for Successful Students focus is: Foster Engaged Attendance. This theme aligns with the student campaign emphasis: GO to Class (and Participate!)
Supporting our students in these small but intentional ways helps them develop lasting habits that contribute to their academic success.
Ways you can Reinforce Success:
- Take attendance in class; discuss why attendance is important to your course.
- Project care, competence, and passion by getting to know your students as individuals, being well organized, and demonstrating enthusiasm for your course content.
- Create at least one opportunity for students to actively participate in each class, and remind students that their presence and participation are important to their classmates, too.
- Use “exit ticket” activities (digitally or on paper) to provide students with credit or points for their attendance (for example, asking students to answer a reflection question or provide a key takeaway or question from the day’s lesson).
Resources for You:
Together, we can help students strengthen the skills and behaviors that make them successful at UCA. Thank you for supporting this important initiative!
