Blackboard Shells for Spring 2024 Courses to Open
Blackboard shells for ALL spring courses that begin at the start of the spring semester will become available and visible to students on Friday, January 5, 2024. This allows you to communicate with your students before instruction begins on Thursday, January 11, especially concerning your expectations for the first class meeting (e.g. expectations of in-person or online learning, attendance).
To avoid students having access to all content at once, you can hide content in Blackboard. To hide content areas you do not wish students to see: In the left-hand navigation menu, click the down arrow to the right of Online Classroom (1) and select “Hide Link” (2).
To hide individual items, the process is very similar. Click the pull-down arrow next to the title of the item (3) and select “Make Unavailable” (4).
A quick video on the Instructional Technology Knowledge Base is available to illustrate the process.
Important Notes:
- Students should not be allowed to submit coursework before the first day of the course.
- If you are teaching a spring second half of the term course, your course will not open until later in the spring.
- Whether you hide an entire content area like the Online Classroom or individual items, when you are ready for students to have access you MUST remember to make those areas/items accessible again.
