“Is too Much Economic Freedom Bad for Women and Families?”

Economic Freedom is under fire from both the left and the right; there is a convergence toward greater government intervention in family life. Some argue that families were better off when women stayed home and thus agitate for policies encouraging them to return to a more traditional role of wife and mother. Do these policies, which amount to familial protectionism, empower women and families? Join Dr. Anne Bradley, the George and Sally Mayer Fellow for Economic Education and vice president of academic affairs at The Fund for American Studies, for a lively discussion on how economic freedom impacts families and gives parents choices about how to get the most out of life. Redefining Consent: Sexual Violence, Justice, and Women’s Emotional Labor in Japan

“Redefining Consent: Sexual Violence, Justice, and Women’s Emotional Labor in Japan”
Dr. Akiko Takeyama (Professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Director of the Center for East Asian Studies, University of Kansas)

The #MeToo movement ignited global discussions on sexual violence, consent, and accountability, including in Japan, where survivors spoke out. Cases like Kaori’s accusations against Nobuyoshi Araki and Shiori Ito’s revelations about an uncharged rape case exposed systemic issues in Japan’s legal and cultural response to sexual violence. In 2023, Japan amended its Penal Code to redefine rape as nonconsensual sex and raise the age of consent. This talk examines how rape myths, cultural attitudes, and legal history normalize sexual violence. Using NHK’s survey of 38,000 people, it explores how women’s emotional labor complicates perceptions of consent and justice.

HPER Center Area Closures

Dr. Wages and Dr. Price-Blackshear To Offer New Course on Close Relationships and the Music of Taylor Swift

We are excited to announce the offering of a special new course on the science of close relationships as explored through the music of artist and icon Taylor Swift. Students will delve into the emotional depth of Swift’s lyrics and discover scientific insights into intimate relationships. This course will be perfect for music lovers, Swifties, and those interested in improving their relationship skills. Griffin Planetarium Shows

Griffin Planetarium shows this Friday, March 7, and Saturday, March 8, at 7:00pm. The one-hour shows this week include a tour of the current sky, a flight around the universe, and the full-dome movie “Phantom of the Universe: The Hunt for Dark Matter”. The planetarium is located in the Conway Corporation Center for the Sciences. Seating starts 10 minutes before show time. Admission is free. Seating limited to the first 94. No admission after the shows begin. No food or drink allowed.

UCA Welcomes Artist-in-Residence Crystal Wagner

Crystal Wagner holds an MFA from the University of Tennessee. In 2013 she was awarded the highly coveted Pollock-Krasner Grant. Wagner’s interest in combining 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional forms, alternative use of materials, and massive site-specific installations, have led to her artwork being exhibited globally.

Commissions include installations for NIKE’s KOBE X Blackout Experience, Bombay Sapphire, TOYOTA, and Warner Brothers, “Get Animated Invasion,” at LA’s Grammy Museum. Her two works for Viacom, including a 117 ft piece at their headquarters in Times Square, was featured by the New York Times and VH1’s Top 20 Countdown.
