Miss Essence Pageant

Since the pageant began in 1975, Students for the Propagation of Black Culture (SPBC) has spearheaded the event. SPBC raises money through several fundraisers throughout the year to fund the pageant. Scholarship money is then awarded to the top three contestants. The contestants compete in swimwear, talent and evening wear. Finally, they answer an on-stage question. We have the pleasure of having different judges volunteer each year.

“Competing in the Miss Essence Scholarship Pageant was one of the best decisions I made during my time at UCA. If I had not competed in the pageant, I do not think I would have had the opportunity to showcase my talent of speed painting. While being a campus queen, my leadership and public speaking skills dramatically improved. The entire Miss Essence experience made me proud of who I am and feel beautiful from within.”

Paris Robinson, Miss Essence 2019

“This pageant was founded to give women of color a chance to showcase their intelligence, talents and beauty at UCA. This really gives them an opportunity to shine.”
