Baum Gallery Opens New Exhibit

The Baum Gallery of Fine Art at the University of Central Arkansas announces its new show So Tiny: An Exhibition of Small Works in 3-D . The exhibit will on display through Thursday, Oct. 25.

A reception for the exhibition will be held Thursday, Sept. 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

Artists from all over the country submitted their tiny pieces, and 20 different artists were chosen by juror Virginia Samsel: Bruce A. Alves III of Missouri, David Bligh of Massachusetts, Carl W. Brickhouse of Tennessee, Gratia Brown of Pennsylvania, Kurt Dyrhaug of Texas, Eleanor Elkin of Massachusetts, Annie Evans of Georgia, Stephanie Gamboni of Minnesota, Jessica Goldfinch of Louisiana, Jamey Grimes of Alabama, Sally Hagy-Boyer of New York, Mary Alison Lucas of California, Hollie Lyko of Iowa, Liz Richter of Missouri, Joel D. Schroeder of Wyoming, Ian M. Shelly of Indiana, Natalie E. Shelly of Indiana, Mary Ruth Smith of Texas, Karen Wise of Illinois, and Nicholas W. Wood of Texas. The show will create an intimate art experience that invites guests to closely examine the small works.

The show will feature a range of media including: ceramics, sculpture, mixed media, glass and fiber works. All entries were required to be “smaller than a shoebox.”

“It takes talent and additional skill in a medium to create something very small that can hold its own in an art gallery or museum,” said Baum Gallery director Barclay McConnell, “and we are very excited to showcase these miniature works for visitors to the Baum.”

The juror, Virginia Samsel, is a professional artist with significant expertise with small work. She received significant attention from the art world for her 2002 miniature installation project titled, Locker 50B. Samsel received her BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions. Her current work utilizes diverse media and focuses on imagery from European folk tales and Southern lore. She lives and works in Richmond, Va.

The Baum Gallery’s hours of operation are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday 1-5 p.m.
