The Center for Chinese Language and Culture will host a public Lecture “Women in China: A Century of Family Revolutions” on Thursday, March 7th, 2024 at 4:30 pm in Art Lecture Hall in McCastlain Hall. The lecture is open to the public.
The speaker, Dr. Jiang Jin, who was the founding director of the Center for Gender and Cultural Studies at East China Normal University, is currently the Yeung Family Distinguished Visiting Professor in East Asian Studies at Johns Hopkins University.
A recent reproductive crisis has brought renewed interest in the century-old “family problem” (家庭问题) and “women’s problem” (妇女问题) in China. Related issues have not only been debated in the discursive field, but also informed cross-border fields such as social policymaking and the law. Intrigued by questions such as why the state calls for increasing reproductivity have met with lukewarm responses, we will start with a historical overview before discussing some of the ongoing important changes in the family system and women’s roles in Chinese society.
