Ceramics and sculpture artist Jonathan Christensen Caballero, who joined us back in September, returns this week to complete his residency as part of UCA’s Artists in Residence program. He will give an Artist Talk on November 7, 2024 from 6-7pm in the Windgate Center for Fine and Performing Arts, room 167. Christensen Caballero’s mixed-media work focuses on the human figure and histories of Latin American laborers in the US.

Author and scholar Mecca Jamilah Sullivan joins us for a residency as part of UCA’s Artists in Residence program. She will have four events on campus: an interview with Creative Writing graduate students; a Master Class with graduate students; a public reading and book signing; and a craft talk with Creative Writing students. Writer/scholar Mecca Jamilah Sullivan is the author of three books: the novel Big Girl (2022), a New York Times Editors’ Choice and winner of the Next Generation Indie Book Award for First Novel and the Balcones Fiction Prize; the short story collection Blue Talk and Love (2015), winner of the Judith Markowitz Award from Lambda Literary; and her contribution to literary theory The Poetics of Difference: Queer Feminist Forms in the African Diaspora (2021), winner of the William Sanders Scarborough Prize from the Modern Language Association. Sullivan will be in-residence on November 6th and 7th, 2024.

The Arkansas Horn Club, celebrating its 25th year, will present “A Saint Hubert Celebration” on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 5:00 pm, in the Recital Hall of Snow Fine Arts Center at University of Central Arkansas. Horn Ensemble works on this concert include such composers as Rossini, Stiegler, Cheetham, and Weber. Arkansas Horn Club director and UCA Horn Professor Brent Shires will conduct, and also play a solo work “Alla Caccia” by Alan Abbott, with Terrie Shires at the piano; UCA graduate student Brian Wyatt will guest conduct. Saint Hubert is venerated as the patron saint of the hunt, and in many European cities masses and concerts are performed that include groups of French horns and hunting horns. The Arkansas Horn Club is a community-focused group, open to French horn players of all ages. Twelve UCA students representing the UCA Model United Nations (MUN) student organization participated in the 14th Arkansas Collegiate Model United Nations (ACMUN) Conference held at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma on Saturday, November 2, 2024. The ACMUN conference was held jointly with the Oklahoma Model United Nations (OKMUN) Conference. The UCA group, which included Abdulaziz Karamah Anike, Abbie Asher, Dice Ferguson, Jaylan Harris, Nadira Souley Issaka, Moustapha Kone, Julien Mrad, Grace Mureithi, Julia Ray, Laura Carrillo Rodriguez, Kyle Urban, and Ava Walker, represented the countries of Algeria, Ecuador, El Salvador, India, Qatar, Sierra Leone, and Ukraine. The conference included simulations of the UN General Assembly (1st Committee), UN Human Rights Council (HRC), UN Security Council, and the Council of the Arab League. Dr. Mark Elrod and Dr. Mark Mullenbach, faculty members in the Department of Government, Public Service, and International Studies, served as the faculty advisors for the UCA students. The following UCA students were recognized for their performances at the 14th ACMUN Conference: Julien Mrad – Outstanding Delegate (Security Council, Algeria); Grace Mureithi – Outstanding Delegate (UN General Assembly 1st Committee, Ukraine); and Kyle Urban – Outstanding Delegate-Honorable Mention (UN General Assembly 1st Committee, Qatar).

The purpose of the UCA Veterans and Military Resource Center is to assist the student Veteran, their dependents, and currently
serving military members to better understand and access the education benefits they have earned. In addition, our office assists veterans in their transition to the civilian college environment so that they may be more successful. Various forms of outreach
will take place by our resource center throughout the year to aid our military connected community towards success.
Attend the program to learn more about this student population and see the new designated space to assist them.
