The November 1 deadline for submitting photographs for the 2024 JMNR photo contest is rapidly approaching. Photographs may be taken in any of UCA’s natural areas including in the natural area behind Lewis Science Center and at Steel Creek on the Buffalo River. Students, alumni, faculty and staff are all invited to submit photographs. Winning photographs will be displayed in the CNSM Dean’s Office, in CCCS and LSC, and on UCA social media. Any photographic equipment may be used; many winning photographs in the past were taken with cell phones. Please send photographs (jpg or tif files) directly to me attached to an email. More complete instructions are attached.

Join us TODAY for Week 7 of the Faculty for Successful Students series as we dive into the importance of creating opportunities for self-knowledge. Students can make more informed academic and career choices by reflecting on their strengths, weaknesses, and interests, leading to increased motivation and academic success. Self-knowledge also fosters resilience and adaptive learning strategies, improving overall student well-being and performance.

This session, hosted by CETAL and Student Success Services, will discuss the following topics:

– Available resources through Student Success
– Utilizing a peer success coach
– Various types of and methods for reflection

Dr. M Shelly Conner, Associate Professor of Creative Writing, will be awarded an Individual Artist Fellowship by the Arkansas Arts Council in an event on Thursday, Oct 3, 2024.
The event is FREE and OPEN to the public including free food, wine and beer and will be held at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, Thursday, Oct 3, 2024 from 5-8pm.

The Individual Artist Fellowship grants are unconditional, non-matching awards made directly to individual Arkansas creatives. Independent panels annually select artists from six categories to receive $5,000 each. Categories change each year. This year, about 150 artists applied for the grants in the categories of multisensory art, community engagement, contemporary craft with glass or ceramic/pottery component, fashion and/or costume design, novel or memoir writing and docu-genre filmmaking.
Dr. M. Shelly Conner, of Cabot, was chosen this year in the category of memoir or novel writing. Conner is a multi-genre writer whose work includes playwriting, screenwriting, fiction, essay and creative nonfiction writing. She is an associate professor of creative writing at the University of Central Arkansas where she also co-directs the MFA Program for writers. She is author of the Nautilus award-winning novel everyman.

The international percussion sensation STOMP returns to Reynolds Performance Hall on October 22, 2024 at 7:00 pm.

From its beginnings as a street performance in the UK, STOMP has grown into an international sensation over the past 29 years, having performed in more than 50 countries and in front of more than 26 million people. Throughout its life, the show has continued to change by creating new material to bring music to everyday objects. It is safe to say you will never again look at supermarket carts or plumbing fixtures the same way… or paint cans, or kitchen sinks or…

Synchronized stiff-bristle brooms become a sweeping orchestra, eight Zippo lighters flip open and closed to create a fiery fugue; wooden poles thump and clack in a rhythmic explosion. STOMP uses everything but conventional percussion instruments – dustbins, suitcases, radiator hoses, boots, hub caps – to fill the stage with a compelling and unique act that is often imitated but never duplicated.

Current and retired UCA Faculty and Staff may each receive two FREE tickets to three of the Public Appearances performances in the 2024-25 season.

* To obtain your tickets you must visit the box office in person with your current UCA ID before the day of the performance.
* Free tickets are subject to seating availability and, therefore, an event may sell out before the date arrives for free tickets.
* We cannot place orders for free tickets over the phone, nor can you bring the ID of anyone else in order to obtain more than 2 free tickets.
* You cannot receive more than 2 free tickets for an event, however we have great discounts on tickets for purchase.

Griffin Planetarium shows this Friday October 4 and Saturday October 5 at 7:00pm: The one-hour shows this week include a tour of the current sky (including how to see Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas this month), a review of the Europa Clipper mission, and the full-dome movie “Secret Lives of Stars” narrated by Patrick Stewart. The planetarium is located in the Conway Corporation Center for the Sciences. Seating starts 10 minutes before show time. Admission is free. Seating limited to the first 94. No admission after the shows begin. No food or drink allowed.
