SLANT and Vortex will co-host a fall semester Poetry Coffeehouse at 7 p.m. on October 2, in the Fireplace Room of McCastlain Hall. This event, which is open to both undergraduate and graduate students in any academic discipline, is designed to provide student writers with an opportunity to showcase their creative work.

Students may read up to three poems, which can be either original or from a favorite poet.

To be added to the line-up of readers, students should contact Molly Coleman, Graduate Assistant for SLANT, at mcoleman5@cub.uca.edu.

SLANT is UCA’s journal of contemporary poetry, now in its 38th year. Twice annually, it publishes original work by some of the finest poets from around the United States and beyond. Vortex is an award-winning literary and art magazine run for, with, and by UCA students who comprise the editorial staff and make all editorial decisions.

The University of Central Arkansas will host Jonathan Christensen Caballero as an artist-in-residence from Sept. 16 to Sept. 20, 2024. The artist will return to UCA from Nov. 3 to Nov. 8, 2024, to complete the residency.

The Indiana University Bloomington-educated sculpture and ceramic artist will participate in two public events. The first one, presented on Sept. 19 at 5 p.m. in the Windgate Center lecture hall 167, will be a panel discussion titled “Harvesting Change: Art Activism and Latin American Labor in Arkansas.” Other panelists include Magaly Licolli (co-founder of Venceremos, a worker-based organization in Arkansas whose mission is to ensure the human rights of poultry workers), Benjamin Garner (Independent filmmaker and associate professor of marketing at UCA), and Alejandro González Landeros (assistant professor of Spanish at UCA).

The second public event, presented on Nov. 7 at 6 p.m., in the Windgate Center lecture hall 167, will be an artist talk about his work, which will be on display at the Windgate Center Gallery beginning Sept. 3 and on view through Oct. 4 (gallery hours: M-F, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.).

“Our students and our community will benefit from seeing his work in the Windgate Gallery as well as interacting with him in person through various artist talks and student workshops,” said faculty sponsor and Department of Art and Design Associate Chair Liz Smith.

Caballero will visit the Central American Literature class (Sept. 17, 10:50 a.m. to 12:05 p.m., Irby 204) and the Latin American Cultures class (Sept 18, 9-9:50 a.m.) in the School of Language and Literature. He will also work with ceramics and sculpture students in the Department of Art and Design during both visits (Sept. 16, Sept. 18, Nov. 4, and Nov. 6, 2-2:40 p.m., Windgate 3D Building 112).

Caballero works at the Kansas City Art Institute as a Sculpture Shop Technician and teaches sculpture. His mixed-media work focuses on the human figure and Latin American laborers in the U.S. As Smith explains, “His work is powerful in the way it speaks to both the challenges and the beauty of the Latino experience in our country, an experience we should all try to understand.”

This residency is sponsored by the Department of Art and Design in collaboration with the School of Language and Literature.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2024-25, the UCA Artists-in-Residence program is funded by UCA arts fees with additional support from Engage Management and Pyramid Art, Books, and Custom Framing. UCA Public Appearances presents MALEVO at Reynolds Performance Hall on Thursday, October 3, at 7:00 pm.

Known as the “South American Sensation” this thrilling all-male group, specialized in Malambo, (a traditional Argentine folk dance set to the beat of the bombo legüero drum) present a show of pure energy and rhythm, merging the Malambo to a modern, transgressive and avant-garde vision while staying true to the cultural foundations of the traditional gaucho artform. Set to a pulsating rhythm of drums, the choreographies combine the use of boleadoras- a leather and stone hunting tool used by Gauchos-, with fast leg movements, energetic zapateados (stomping), and quick cepillados (“brushing”/”scrubbing”) that awakens the senses and leaves the adrenaline running high.

MALEVO shot to fame in 2016 when their act was showcased on Season 11 of “America’s Got Talent” where they continued to the semi-finalists round. Since then, they have had numerous successes including performances in Las Vegas, New York, Dubai, Paris, Cairo, St Petersburg and Montreal as well as special performances with Latin pop-star Ricky Martin, Cirque du Soleil, and a year-long performance season at Universal Studios Osaka, Japan.

With its passionate drumming, fiery theatrics and explosive dance, audiences will see why Malevo has been named as an official Cultural Ambassador to the National Identity of Argentina.

Happy Fall semester from Academic Advising! I hope everyone is having a great semester so far!

Just a quick reminder for the upcoming Majors Fair on Thursday, October 3, from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m. in the Ronnie Williams Student Center Ballroom. There will be lots of great information about our disciplines, as well as a lot of fun and camaraderie with others.

We will be looking for the best table design and the most helpful tables. Judging will start at 12:30, so make sure your department is fully set up by that time. Students are eager to talk to you about your discipline. With the start of the new “27 Hour Rule”, students are required to declare a major at 27 hours, so expect some undeclared students with questions.
