Little Rock’s first orchestra was formed in the 1920’s and operated sporadically for many years with musicians playing for the love of music. In 1966 the Arkansas Orchestra Society was formed to encourage the growth of a professional musical organization and to develop native musical talent. The fledgling orchestra became more structured and performed four concerts in Little Rock during the 1968-69 Season. The next year two chamber orchestra concerts were presented. The ASO Guild was also formed in 1969-70.
Dr. Francis McBeth of Ouachita Baptist University, a well known composer, was director-conductor of ASO from 1970 to 1973. In 1970 ASO also hired professional musicians and guest artists. Internationally renowned conductor Dr. Francis McBeth resigned. Kurt Klippstatter served as director-conductor until his resignation in June 1980. During his year with the Orchestra it realized a steady increase in popularity, and he helped it gain a solid musical reputation. Robertson Henderson succeeded Klippstatter as director-conductor in January 1981.
The Arkansas Orchestra Society supports the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, the Modern arts Quintet, and the Arkansas Symphony String Instruction Program. The Society continues to expand and offers more musical activity at a professional level and continues to educate the state’s youth about music.
