The University of Central Arkansas is committed to academic service-learning. Academic service-learning is a course-based teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.

Students are exposed to a few service-learning experiences throughout the degree program. One of these experiences is the College Square Senior Fit Club. Students are exposed to a hands-on education in pre-participation paperwork, fitness assessment, and exercise prescription while working with an older adult for 10 weeks as a student trainer.

Student Research

Students are also encouraged to take an active role in the research process, whether that’s being a primary contributor on an original investigation or assisting with research conducted by the professors. A few of our recent graduates have conducted and presented research at the Central States Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine, and at the annual International Society of Biomechanics in Sports (ISBS) meeting.

Internships – Locally Grown, Nationally Cultivated

Many students choose to remain local for their internship and we have many great opportunities right here in Arkansas. We have strong partnerships with many facilities in the Little Rock-Conway Area whether you are interested in cardiac rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, sports performance, rehabilitation and therapy, and fitness leadership or facility management.

However, students have had successful experiences with out-of-state internships. A few recent locations in which graduates completed their internship include the Hilton Head Health Resort, NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Fitness Center, the Bradley Center for Wellness, and the University of Hawai’i Strength & Conditioning.

Check with internship supervisor for specific dates as related to internship deadlines and completion. For questions about internships in the B.S. Exercise Science program, please contact Kim Eskola at keskola@uca.edu
