Mark your calendars for Posters at the Capitol on February 15, 2017!

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) undergraduates from across the state will present their research to elected state officials, the media, the general public, as well as other undergraduates and faculty in the Arkansas State Capitol rotunda.

Dr. Patrick Desrochers, Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemistry at UCA is the primary organizer of this event and Dr. William Slaton, Associate Professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at UCA is the web page and social media organizer.

Last Home Football Tailgate of the Season 11/12

CNSM Tailgate and Charity Cook-off — Saturday, 11/12 at 12 noon during the UCA tailgate on Bruce Street for a Charity Cook-Off between Dr. George Bratton, Dr. Brad Teague, and President Tom Courtway. Please bring canned food and/or cash donations which benefit the UCA Food Pantry.

The Cook-Off will occur at the CNSM tailgating spot on Bruce Street in front of the Crafton Alumni Pavilion.

Science Night 11/3

The last Science Night for the Fall Semester is taking place at Bob & Betty Courtway Middle School on Thursday, 11/3, from 5:30- 7:30 pm. Different student groups from CNSM, including the STEM Residential College, STEMteach, Pre-Med and Biology Clubs, Fish and Wildlife, and many more, will be sharing science with the community!

Science night is an opportunity for school children and their families to participate in a broad range of scientific activities.  These activities aim to spark interest in science by exposing children to the importance of science in our communities, the enjoyment and exploration found in science careers, and simple scientific concepts.  This CNSM outreach project is coordinated by Dr. Zaida Gomez-Cramer in the Biology Department.

ACTM Regional Math Contest

On March 5, 2016, approximately 100 junior and senior high school students in central Arkansas took part in the Arkansas Council of Teachers of Mathematics Regional Contest held in the Department of Mathematics at UCA. Competition was held in the categories of Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-calculus, Calculus, and Statistics. Mathematics Faculty members Dr. Carolyn Pinchback and Mrs. Loi Booher were co-directors organized the contest. Top three finishers in each category received trophies, and certificates were given to honorable mentions. Mathematics Faculty members Dr. Charles Watson, Mrs. Crsytal Spellman, and Dr. Ramesh Garimella and all graduate teaching assistants in mathematics helped in organizing the contest, grading the tests and presenting the awards. There were several such regional contests held through out the state. Top three finishers in each category form each region will be invited next month  to UCA Math Department to participate in the ACTM State Math Contest.


Computer Coding 2015 @ UCA

2015 Coding

Computer Coding 2015 @ UCA for middle and high school students is a summer program sponsored by the Department ofMathematics, Department of Computer Science, and STEM Institute at UCA.

The goal of this program is to provide kids with an early opportunity to learn computer programming. The students will be taught basic programming concepts, various simple computing techniques and problem solving skills with some hands-on project work.  “Scratch” and/or on-line resources will be introduced so students can practice and work on their projects.  Students will learn important basic mathematical and computer concepts that improve their creative thinking, logical reasoning, problem solving, and team collaboration skills.

The program will be conducted by Mr. Sudheer Kavi, a Senior Solutions Developer at Acxiom and an adjunct professor of Computer Science at UCA.

When: June 9-July 3, 2015

Prep for Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, & Algebra II Summer Program

Algebra CampTrack 1 – Pre-Algebra Prep Class (June 8 – July 2, 2015)
Meets Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 9:20 a.m.
Designed for rising 7th and 8th graders who will be taking Pre-Algebra or an equivalent class in the
upcoming academic year.

Track 2 – Algebra I Prep Class (June 8 – July 2, 2015)
Meets Monday – Friday from 9:30 a.m. – 10:20 a.m.
Designed for rising 8th and 9th graders who will be taking Algebra I or an equivalent class in the
upcoming academic year.

Track 3 – Algebra II Prep Class (June 8 – July 2, 2015)
Meets Monday – Friday from 10:30 a.m. – 11:20 a.m.
Designed for high school students who will be taking Algebra II or an equivalent class in the
upcoming academic year.
