University of Central Arkansas President Lu Hardin today announced he appointed Warwick Sabin to the position of associate vice president for communications effective March 19.”Warwick Sabin is an outstanding writer and politically astute,” Hardin said. “His academic credentials are extraordinary; having studied as a Marshall Scholar and having been a member of the USA Today All-American team. I am excited to have Warwick Sabin as a part of the UCA family.”
Sabin, 30, currently is the Associate Editor of the Arkansas Times and co-host of “Unconventional Wisdom,” a public affairs program on the Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN). Previously he was Director of Development for the William J. Clinton Presidential Foundation in Little
Rock, and before that he served as Communications Director for U.S. Rep. Marion Berry (Ark.-01) in Washington, D.C. Selected as a 1998 Marshall Scholar, he earned an M.A. (Oxon) in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford University in 2000. During his time in England, he was the
speechwriter to U.S. Ambassador Philip Lader at the American Embassy in London. Earlier he held internships at Foreign Affairs magazine in New York City and the White House. In 1998 he graduated summa cum laude from the University of Arkansas, where he was president of the student body.
Sabin also was named a 1997 Truman Scholar, as well as a member of the 1998 USA Today All-American Academic Team.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to help advance a dynamic university and underscore the importance of higher education in Arkansas,” Sabin said. “UCA is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, and there is an undeniable energy on campus as the university expands in so many positive, innovative ways under Lu Hardin’s leadership.”
Sabin is also looking forward to teaching classes at UCA, most likely in the political science and/or mass communication departments. He also may exercise an option to continue writing and broadcast work on a freelance basis.
Kane Webb, formerly editorial page writer for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, had previously committed to the UCA communications position. Webb has decided to remain in editorial writing and management.
