Volunteers are needed for Faulkner County?s annual fall litter pick-up campaign during the months of September and October. The kick-off event for the clean-up will be Saturday, Sept. 18 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Conway Chamber of Commerce parking lot.
Co-sponsored by the Keep Faulkner County Beautiful commission, the clean-up is being held in conjunction with the Great Arkansas Clean-up, the annual fall statewide litter pick-up campaign presented by Keep Arkansas Beautiful. State sponsors are Glad Manufacturing, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department, Coca-Cola and the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality.
KFCB encourages everyone in Faulkner County to join in this effort. Campus organizations and church and youth groups can challenge each other for the number of bags collected; service organizations and businesses can earn community service points; families can use the clean-up as an educational experience and/or family outing. Areas to clean will be assigned, but anyone can form a team and adopt an area of their choosing. Groups and individuals can also pick their own dates in September or October to do their work, but they are asked to call Faulkner County Clean-up Coordinator Judy Corcoran at 450-5137 or 329-8584 to get supplies and work area assignments. It is also recommended that volunteers wear work gloves for the ?dirty work.?
The Conway Sanitation Department will set up a large roll-off dumpster at the Chamber?s parking lot for workers to unload their bags of trash. Or filled bags can be left along the sides of the streets and highways for Highway Department personnel to pick up: orange ones for state highways and black ones for city streets.
Last year?s Great Arkansas Clean-up reported 73 events in 57 counties. Other statistics consisted of 1.9 million pounds of trash, 2,259 miles of roadway cleaned, 110 parks and public areas, and 199 miles of shoreline. Also 23 illegal dumps were closed. This volunteer effort provided the state of Arkansas a cost-saving value of more that $777,000.
To volunteer or get more information, persons may contact county clean-up coordinator Judy Corcoran at judyc@uca.edu, 450-5137 (day) or 329-8584 (night).
