CONWAY—The University of Central Arkansas University Chorus will be in concert Monday, April 18, at 6:30 p.m. in the Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.

The event is free and open to the public.

This non-auditioned choir is a mixture of music majors and non-music majors and will feature one graduate and four undergraduate student conductors.

Dr. Sheri Cook-Cunningham, director of the University Chorus, said the concert would combine multicultural music with music from American and English composers. The concert will begin with one of the most well-known South African tunes, “Siyahamba”, which means, “We are marching in the light of God.” It will be followed by an Israeli song, “Erev Shel Shoshanim” by Joseph Hadar.

The second section will highlight American composers such as Aaron Copland (revivalist tune “Zion’s Walls”) and Alice Parker (“Hark I Hear the Harps Eternal”).  The spirit of rural America will be represented by the song, “Auction Cries”, which imitates the sounds of an auctioneer and the wares he is selling. The concert will conclude with “Gate Gate” by Brian Tate. This choral work is based on a Buddhist mantra and combines a driving rhythm with layers of melodies.
