CONWAY — University of Central Arkansas Argumentation and Advocacy students will debate freedom of speech and freedom of religion at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, in the College of Business 107.

The event is free and open to the public.

The debate will feature students from the classes of Dr. Monika Alston-Miller and Dr. John Saunders, both of the UCA School of Communication. Members of both classes will debate whether Americans should exercise absolute freedom of speech and absolute freedom of religion.

Alston-Miller encourages UCA students and the public to attend the debates, especially in the aftermath of the presidential election.

“The debates will provide [the audience] with an opportunity to see controversial subjects discussed in a structured environment,” Alston-Miller said.

In preparation for the debates, students have debated the issues of absolute freedom of speech and religion within the classroom before coming together as large teams to compete with their opposing class. Prior to the debates, students also learned proper argument structure, techniques and commonly used fallacies.
