The Hughes Leadership Institute students will host a pizza party for 30 students in Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Central Arkansas, then take the students to the UCA Men’s Basketball Game on Saturday, January 26, 2013. The “littles” in Big Brothers Big Sisters will meet coaches and some players of the Bears team, as well as take pictures with Bruce D. Bear, the university mascot.
The students in the Hughes Leadership Institute (HLI) are UCA freshman who are living in Hughes Residential College and are currently developing and refining their leadership skills. The HLI members are doing this by being a mentor and representative of their peers, being involved in service learning, and bringing awareness to the community of the benefits of living in a UCA residential college.
The HLI students chose to recognize National Mentor Month, January, with this activity. The UCA Residential Colleges strive to emphasize the importance of the Advocates and Learning Assistants who mentor within the residential colleges and highlight the importance of mentoring children in the community.
