The University of Central Arkansas has a new musical instrument once owned by world-renowned composer Dr. Francis McBeth.
McBeth, who passed away in 2012, was a conductor of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. McBeth’s wife, Mary, and her family donated the Baldwin 48 HR organ, which was purchased in 1968, to the university.
“This organ is important to UCA and Ferguson Chapel, as it replaces another organ that was in disrepair. This space can now function to have organ music played for a variety of performances and events,” said Dr. Paige Rose, chair of the music department. “Also noteworthy is that the organ was once used by world-renowned composer, Dr. Francis McBeth, who was the conductor of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and the resident composer at Ouachita Baptist University. Historically and musically, this organ is quite a significant donation.”
The Baldwin 48 HR organ was placed on the pulpit at Ferguson Chapel campus after renovations to the structure were completed in February.
