University Central Arkansas launches 313-TALKUCA, an anonymous reporting mechanism for any student concerns.
Students or others can use mobile devices that have texting capabilities to text 313-TALKUCA (313-825-5822). Once a report is submitted, the texter will be guided through the process by a staff member. Types of reports might include depression, hazing, uncharacteristic or extreme aggression, suicide ideation or major life events such as family deaths, change in financial status or loss of a relationship.
This about meeting students where they are. We examined what we can and should be doing to encourage our students to let us know about concerns they have, and an anonymous text line seems like a good idea,” said Kelly Owens, dean of students. “Students have developed communication styles and skills in a world of texting, and our hope is they will feel comfortable if they do have the need to submit a concern. And the anonymity helps students who might be uncomfortable reporting with their name/phone number attached. 313-TALKUCA will offer a protected space through which concerned UCA community members can communicate.”
313-TALKUCA was officially launched with the new academic year, and is fully operational. The platform will be managed by the Dean of Students office. The platform is not meant to be an emergency response, and the reporter receives an automatic text to explain that it is monitored during regular business hours. Additionally, the reporter is told that 9-1-1 should be called for emergency situations. Texts received during regular business hours will have a response within a few hours. If a text is received after business hours, a response can be expected relatively early during the next business day.
Owens added that those who are unsure whether a submission qualifies for 313-TALKUCA should submit thereport. Staff we will make a determination about next steps, she said.
