The University of Central Arkansas Jazz I ensemble will perform at South On Main in Little Rock on Oct. 2.
The 7 p.m. performance is free and open to the public, and food and drink will be available for purchase throughout the event. South On Main is located at 1304 Main St. in Little Rock.
This will be the Jazz I ensemble’s first performance at South On Main this year, and plans are to make it an annual event, said Dr. Gail Robertson, Jazz I director and assistant professor of tuba and euphonium at UCA.
Robertson said that the ensemble would feature the recently retired UCA saxophone professor Dr. Jackie Lamar, who will perform “Julian” by Phil Woods. Lamar retired in the spring after 32 years at UCA. Her successor, Dr. Matt Taylor, will also be featured during the performance, with the piece “Dat Dere” by Bobby Timmons.
Rychy St. Vincent, a popular Little Rock jazz singer, will join the ensemble for the piece “Here’s That Rainy Day,” by Jonny Burke and Jimmy Van Heusen. UCA graduate student Cole Cavanah will perform Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg’s iconic “Over the Rainbow.”
The ensemble is scheduled to perform other Jazz standards on the night, including Duke Ellington’s “Satin Doll,” and Frank Rosolino’s “Blue Daniel.”
