The University of Central Arkansas will host the fifth annual Girl Power in STEM Friday, April 28 on the campus.
The featured speaker for the event is NASA astrophysicist and Arkansas native, Dr. Amber Straughn, who will speak during lunch at 11:30 a.m. in the Student Center.
Girl Power in STEM is a unique opportunity for 8th-grade girls in Arkansas to gain hands-on experience and learn about careers related to science, technology, engineering and math.
Girls will interact directly with female professionals, primarily from Arkansas, and current UCA students to develop a greater understanding of their own potential and power. This exceptional event will encourage girls to pursue academic excellence in their high school and college years, as well as provide them with a “college day” experience.
Approximately 300 girls from around the state are expected to attend the event.
This event is free to the girls and is supported by grants from the Carl Perkins Fund from the Arkansas Department of Career Education, Southwestern Energy, Norton Endowment, Acxiom, Arkansas Electric Cooperative and Arkansas Community Foundation. Additional support is provided by Conway Regional Hospital, Domino’s Pizza, Pearson and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
