The annual Arkansas Model United Nations Conference will be held Nov. 19 and Nov. 20 on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas. The opening session begins at 1:30 p.m., Nov.19 at Reynolds Performance Hall.
The Arkansas Model United Nations (AMUN) Conference is a two-day simulation of various bodies of the United Nations and related agencies for high school students. About 400 high school students and teachers from Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee will participate in the conference.
Alan W. Eastham, retired U.S. Ambassador to Malawi and the Republic of Congo, is the keynote speaker. Ambassador Eastham is currently a Senior Fellow in International Relations and International Programs at Hendrix College.
The AMUN’s goal is to provide high school students with an opportunity to learn about the United Nations including how countries around the world work together within the UN to solve global problems, such as conflict, poverty, and economic underdevelopment.
“Participating students develop critical thinking, debate, research, and other academic skills through their representation of specific countries in the UN,” said Dr. Mark Mullenbach, AMUN coordinator.
Conference staff consists of 50 college and university students from UCA, UALR, ATC, Hendrix College, UA-Fort Smith and UA-Fayetteville.
