The University of Central Arkansas Department of History, in partnership with the Arkansas State Archives’ National Digital Newspaper Program Advisory Committee, is hosting a live, interactive mini-camp on using historical newspapers to build strong and innovative National History Day projects. The event will take place on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
Participants will discover how to leverage Chronicling America, a historic newspaper database provided by the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Humanities in partnership with state entities like the Arkansas State Archives. Chronicling America features newspaper content from as early as 1756 to as late as 1963.
Camp attendees will explore historical articles and opinion pieces that serve as primary sources for National History Day projects. Facilitators and research mentors for the mini-camp include faculty and staff from the State Archives, the University of Central Arkansas, and the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville. These experts will guide National History Day competitors through the potential of Chronicling America in full sessions and mentor their initial research in small groups.

The camp will be conducted entirely on Zoom. Participants must have the permission of a parent or legal guardian to join and will need to provide Zoom access to their cameras and microphones for the duration of the session to ensure active participation.
