Theatre Students Acknowledged at Regional Festival
Jennifer Hicks of Quitman, was awarded First Place in the Non-Realized Class Projects at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF), Region VI festival held at the University of Oklahoma in Norman recently.
This category includes costume, lighting, and scenery designs from students within the Region VI area, which encompasses colleges and universities from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Missouri, Texas, and New Mexico. Students are encouraged to submit classroom work in these areas and have their work responded to by outside respondents.
Jennifer submitted costume design projects from her work in Costume Design class for the Greek play Medea.The designs were fully illustrated renderings of various characters from the plays. Her mentor during the process was Associate Professor of Theatre, Shauna C. Meador.
Jennifer is a junior Art major and Theatre minor and a student worker in the costume shop at UCA Theatre.
This marks the third year in a row that a UCA Theatre design student has won the costume design competition. The past two winners from UCA were Maho Nashida and Tyler Gunther.
In addition, Tyler Gunther, of Conway, was awarded Meritorious Achievement in Costume Design for his designs for the musical, Urinetown, which was recently produced at UCA Theatre. Tyler’s work was judged along with 15-20 other designers from across the six-state regional area, including graduate students and faculty. Tyler is a junior Theatre major and plans to attend graduate school in costume design upon graduation.
UCA Theatre has consistently been recognized at both the state and regional level for excellence in acting, directing, and theatrical design, having garnered numerous Respondent’s Choice, Director’s Choice, and Regional Committee Choice awards.
