CONWAY – Rewards usually come after success, however, the Office of Student Success at the University of Central Arkansas recently launched a program that provides scholarships to first-time freshmen who accept the challenge to prosper.
Designed to provide freshmen with strategies to enhance their academic success, the Student Success Challenge will show students how to utilize on-campus resources. Through engaging with different offices on campus, participants will become aware and knowledgeable about what UCA has available for them.
As an incentive, first-year entering students who are eligible for the Pell Grant and complete the challenge will receive a one-time $250 Student Success Scholarship for the spring of 2017. First-year entering students who are not eligible for the Pell Grant but choose to complete the challenge can receive selected UCA merchandise from the Office of Student Success.
“This year’s Student Success Challenge Program was created with our students’ immediate needs in mind—primarily funding and academic skills,” said Dr. Julia Winden-Fey, director of the Office of Student Success. “First-year students often need guidance in making the jump from how they studied in high school to how they need to study and manage their time in order to be successful in college.”
Freshmen have until Nov. 1, 2016 to attend workshops, participate in one group advising session and complete a tutoring appointment through designated offices on campus. They must also complete an additional two options that include attending events and completing a survey.
Students who have questions about Pell grant eligibility can contact the Financial Aid Office at 501-450-3140. The Office of Student Success will answer questions about program requirements at 501-450-3125.
Throughout the year, Student Success offers various programs and services to help students become better prepared academically and achieve their educational goals. Each semester, they offer workshops on topics such as time management, test-anxiety, note-taking skills and communication skills.
