Michael Kabotie, a Hopi Artist and Poet, will present “The Journey of the Human Spirit: Hopi Myth and Art in the Modern Age” during X-period on Tuesday, Nov. 8, in Irby Hall, Room 215.
He will also present ?The Journey of the Human Spirit: Hopi Mural Art and the Modern World,? at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9 in McAlister Hall Room 302 during the Honors College High Table.Kabotie was born on the Hopi reservation in the village of Shungopavi in Northern Arizona. After attending school on the reservation, he went to Haskell Indian School in Lawrence, Kan. and then studied at the University of Arizona.
His work, which often uses traditional Hopi Kiva technique to explore the relevance of myth to modern experience, has been exhibited at the Heard Museum and the Museum of Northern Arizona, among other places, and it has appeared on the cover of Arizona Highways.
Kabotie is a remarkable and engaging speaker, drawing on such sources as Jungian psychology and Buddhism, in addition to his Hopi traditions, as he describes his approach to art, poetry and life.
