The UCA Honors College will host ?No-self in Zen Buddhism,? by Jeff Shore during the Honors College High Table at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 8 in McAlister Room 302.
How can Zen Buddhism be accurately described and introduced to an international audience? By clarifying what no-self is all about, we can discern the difficulties inherent in describing and explaining Zen Buddhism and Zen practice. We will attempt to clear away some of the exaggerated claims and simplistic jargon often used, not only by Zen masters, but by Zen scholars and writers. Further, we will try, without trivializing or losing sight of its true intent, to get a “taste” of what this no-self really is all about.
Jeff Shore is an American and lives in Kyoto, Japan. He is professor of International Zen at Hanazono University, and spent the last 21 years training under Keid? Fukushima, head abbot of the T?fukuji training monastery in Kyoto. Shore leads annual retreats in Europe and North America. The focus of his work is accurately expressing, and transmitting, Zen Buddhism in the West.
