The following faculty have recently received grants:Dr. Terry James, Dr. Deborah Walz and Nancy Burris, Upward Bound Program, recently received a $3,289 grant for a proposal titled, ?UCA Upward Bound Summer Food Service Program.?
The grant is being funded by the Arkansas Department of Human Services.
According to James, UCA Upward Bound received supplemental funding from the Arkansas DHS to help pay for meals for Upward Bound participants during a six-week summer program on the UCA campus.
Upward Bound, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, provides additional educational and cultural opportunities to selected low-income, first generational high school students to help prepare them for attending and completing college.
Don Perry, Ginny Adams, Nolan Carter, Jerry Manion, Karen Steelman and Richard Tarkka, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, recently received an $80,000 grant for a proposal titled, ?Incorporating Gas-Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) into a Teaching and Faculty-Mentored Student Research Curriculum.?
The grant is being funded by the National Science Foundation.
According to Perry, ?We will enhance the analytical capabilities in the college and will broaden student experiences with modern instrumentation. Obtaining the GC/MS fills a gap we have in providing a complete scientific background for our natural science majors at UCA. GC/MS is a well-established analytical technique in academics and industry.?
The authors expect that advanced technical industries will find Arkansas more attractive due to the large pool of well-prepared students that the university produces.
Also involved with the grant were K.C. Weaver, David Dussourd and Melissa Kelley.
Kelly Lyon and Lisa Christman, University College, recently received an $800 grant for a proposal titled, ?Cornerstone: Building your Best.?
The grant is being funded by Pearson Education, Inc.
According to Lyon, the grant was used to expand University College orientation during Welcome Week. ?The funds helped UCA faculty increase attendance from 50 to 200,? she said.
Also involved with the grant were Kimberly Cunningham, Shannon Johnson and Dr. Sherri Latimer.
Kathy McDaniel recently received three grants totaling $14,190 for seven traineeship positions in diagnostic and rehabilitation services in speech-language pathology.
The grants are being funded by the North Little Rock School District, the Arch Ford Educational Cooperative and Arkansas Children?s Hospital.
According to McDaniel, the grants will provide training stipend for graduate students in speech-language pathology.
Also involved in the grants were Thelma Jasper, Judy Clay and Patti Martin.
Sharon Ross, Department of Speech-Language Pathology, recently received a $1,000 grant for a proposal titled, ?Monitoring SLP-A Sites.?
The grant is being funded by the Arkansas Board of Examiners in Speech Pathology and Audiology.
According to Ross, the grant will provide training and technical assistance to speech-language pathologists in the state who use speech-language assistants. ?Speech-language pathologists in the state will be better prepared to implement the support personnel model,? Ross said.
