Congressman Tim Griffin, representative for the 2nd District, toured UCA’s STEM Residential College and observed two labs in the Lewis Science Center on Aug. 8.
College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics faculty and staff provided Griffin information on science programs and what the university is doing to promote STEM education.
“We hear all the time that the United States is behind with regards to STEM subjects both at the high school level and college level,” he said. “That matters. It impacts our economy and our ability to compete internationally.”
Griffin praised the university for providing research opportunities at the undergraduate level and for the opening of the STEM Residential College.
UCA opened the STEM Residential College in August 2011. The college is designed to prepare students for careers in technology and science. The residential college provides students a learning and living environment in the areas of math, science, computer science, technology and secondary math/science education.
