Community School of Music classes begin

UCA’s Community School of Music (CSM) is currently accepting students for Beginning Guitar Class, Music Reading 101, the Alexander Technique Group Class and Voices of Central Arkansas, as well as private instruction, according to Jann Bryant, CSM Director. Regular office hours are 8am – 5pm at the CSM office in the UCA Snow Fine Arts Center, Room 203.

Beginning Guitar Class for students age 14 and up will begin Thursday at 6:30pm. Ten one-hour classes provide students with little or no experience on the guitar, a chance to learn to play and read music. Students will learn scales, chords and a variety of popular pieces. Just a few spots are still available. Students are encouraged to bring their own acoustic guitar for the class. Tuition is $128 with a $7 materials fee. Guitarist Nate Mathews is the instructor.

Music Reading 101 is just the class for anyone who wants to learn to read and understand music notation. In four weeks, learn to read notes on the staff, rhythmic values, key signatures, dynamic markings, and more. UCA’s Marian Aun will translate what all those black notes mean so you too can read and appreciate music all the more. Class begins Monday, Sept. 15, at 6pm. Call or email now to reserve your seat. Auditions for the Voices of Central Arkansas Youth Choir, a mixed SATB chorus for students in grades 10-12 and UCA student vocalists continue but are about to wrap up. Tuition varies from $195-225 for the year.

Private and Group lessons are taught in the Alexander Technique by Cliff Hicks, a member of the American Society for the Alexander Technique and a certified instructor for over 20 years. The new Group Lessons, which are offered at an extreme bargain to introduce people to the technique, begin at 2pm September 14 with an open house, and will continue for four additional weeks on Sundays from 2-3pm. Teachers, athletes, office workers, performing artists, and people from every walk of life have used the technique for prevention and recovery from injury and repetitive motion strain, end tension headaches, and to promote endurance. Tuition is $75.

The UCA Community School of Music, now in its 25th year of offering exceptional musical training and instruction in the Central Arkansas area, provides adults and children with an opportunity to pursue music study in a university setting. The faculty of the Community School consists primarily of UCA Department of Music faculty members and selected graduate and undergraduate students, but also includes adjunct instructors who are professional musicians and teachers. Private instruction is offered in piano, voice, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, Suzuki violin and all band and orchestral instruments. Tuition for private lessons varies depending upon the level of the instructor and costs are listed on the CSM website at uca.edu/csm.
