CONWAY — The University of Central Arkansas Department of Communication will present the third annual Communication Week Oct. 12-16.

Communication Week is a yearly celebration showcasing the power of effective and ethical communication, as well as the work of students majoring in communication and public relations. This year’s theme is “Communication is My Superpower.”

All events are free and open to the public.

“Effective communication has tremendous power to do good in the world,” said Tami Phillips, lecturer and chair of Communication Week. “We want to get students thinking about how they can use their powers wisely. A superhero theme is a fun, lighthearted way to have that discussion.”

The week will start at noon Monday, Oct. 12, at the fountain at Harding Centennial Plaza with a costume contest and photo booth. Attendees should be dressed as their favorite superhero or superheroine.

Communication Week activities will continue Tuesday, Oct. 13, with a Lambda Pi Eta Fall 2015 Induction Ceremony from 1:40-2:30 p.m. in the Thompson Hall Grand Foyer. Lambda Pi Eta is the National Communication Association’s honor society.

Suzi Parker, an Arkansas-based journalist and author whose work has appeared in The Economist, The Christian Science Monitor, Town & Country, The Washington Post, The Daily Beast and numerous other national and international publications, will speak Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m. in the Grand Foyer.

An Alumni Panel is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 3 p.m. in the Grand Foyer. Four graduates of the department, Shawanna Rodgers, Dapple McCracken, Allie Hennard and Bobby M. Kelly III, will share their experiences navigating the college-to-career transition with current students.

Communication Week will end on Thursday, Oct. 15, with a Public Relations Student Society of America Resume Workshop from 1:40-2:30 p.m. in the Grand Foyer and the Olive M. Hilliard Speech Showcase at 6 p.m. in College of Business, Room 201.

PRSSA is the foremost organization for students interested in public relations and communication and seeks to advance the public relations profession by nurturing generations of future professionals.

The Hilliard Showcase is a speaking competition that honors the memory of Olive M. Hilliard, who taught writing and communication at UCA. In addition to being excellent speakers, participants must demonstrate potential for leadership, exhibit qualities exemplified in Hilliard’s character, and demonstrate a desire to impact their community positively.

The UCA College of Fine Arts and Communication includes the Departments of Art, Communication, Mass Communication and Theatre, Music and Writing. The college’s primary mission is the preparation of the next generation of artists, educators and communicators. For more information about CFAC, visit www.uca.edu/cfac or call (501) 450-3293.
