CONWAY—Grammy Award-winning classical and jazz clarinetist Eddie Daniels will give a public concert April 20 as part of his visit to the University of Central Arkansas as an artist-in-residence.
The 7:30 p.m. concert at Reynolds Performance Hall will also feature UCA’s Dixieland Band and Jazz Ensembles. Tickets are $10 for the public and free to UCA students, faculty and staff with UCA I.D.
Daniels received his master’s degree in clarinet from Julliard but gained the jazz audience’s attention as a tenor saxophonist with the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra.
With Daniels’ extensive experience in both jazz and classical fields of clarinet and saxophone, Dr. Jackie Lamar, professor of saxophone at UCA, said she and Dr. Kelly Johnson, associate professor of clarinet, had talked about bringing him to UCA for several years.
“He’s a really fabulous artist,” Lamar said. “In bringing him, we thought that we would be hitting a lot of bases [with UCA students].”
Daniels has performed jazz with the Eddie Daniels Quartet, the Cincinnati Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic, the Indianapolis Symphony and the Boston Pops for Public Television. He has performed classically with the London Symphony, the Rotterdam Philharmonic and the Tokyo Symphony.
“Our students are getting the chance to learn from a professional musician who has performed and recorded around the world,” Lamar said.
In addition to the public concert, residency activities include:
- Clarinet masterclass, Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall, April 19, 2-2:50 p.m.
- Jazz improvisation masterclass, Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall, April 20, 1:40-2:30 p.m.
- Saxophone masterclass, Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall, April 20, 2:30-3:50 p.m.
All masterclasses are free and open to the public.
