Art History Symposium to be held at UCA

The 15th Annual College Art History Symposium will be held Thursday and Friday, April 7-8, at the University of Central Arkansas in McCastlain Hall Room 143. The symposium began in 1991 to offer an opportunity for students in art history throughout the state to deliver papers in the field. In addition, the symposium includes a lecture by an outstanding scholar in art history. Since the beginning, UCA and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock have alternated hosting the symposium.

This year UCA will host the day long event where 11 undergraduate and graduate students from UCA and UALR will give 20 minute papers on a variety of topics from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 8. The presentations are open to the public, and listeners are welcome to come and go between presentations as schedules permit.

The special guest speaker this year is Dr. Howard Risatti, chair of the Department of Craft/Material Studies and professor of modern and contemporary art and critical theory in the Department of Art History at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va.

As part of the Symposium, Risatti will deliver a public address on Thursday, April 7 at 6 p.m. in McCastlain Hall Room 143. He will lecture on ?Coliseum Culture: Art in the Age of Spectacle.?

There will be an additional presentation by Risatti on Friday, April 8 at 3 p.m. itled ?Craft versus Design.?

All events are free and open to the public. Those attending the symposium may park without a permit in the visitor parking lot, south of McCastlain. For more information contact Dr. Gayle Seymour at 450-5782.
