The opening reception of the Baum Gallery Spring Season of Exhibitions on Thursday, Jan. 19, will feature Visiting Artist Bruno Surdo of Chicago.
Surdo’s slide lecture in the Art Lecture Hall will focus on his training as a professional artist, his artistic process and the creation of the painting in the Baum Gallery that commemorates the 9/11 World Trade Center catastrophe in New York City. The Baum Gallery is the only Arkansas venue for Surdo’s monumental painting “Tragedy, Memory & Honor.”
Surdo is one of three figurative painters featured in the exhibition ?Context/Content: Making Meaning with the Figure.? He is the founder and director of the School of Representational Art, a visiting professor at the American Academy of the Arts, and a professional artist.
Other featured artists include Kevin Kresse of Arkansas and his “Aesthete” series of paintings, and Douglas Bourgeois of Louisiana and his magic realism paintings that express a melding of personal story and fantasy narratives enriched by popular culture.
The art works in the exhibition give evidence that location and context significantly affect the impact of a work of art.
