When he arrived at UCA as a second semester freshman transfer student, Powell jumped headfirst into campus life by serving as the mascot for football and basketball games. When his true skills came to light, however, athletic department leaders knew they had a golden opportunity on their hands. Powell was quickly moved into a photography position where he began shooting all UCA sports and related events.

Legacy

As a member of the faculty for almost 20 years, Stephanie Watson has grown to love the University of Central Arkansas. Watson came to Conway as an assistant professor in 2003 and has steadily risen through the ranks. She was promoted to associate professor in 2009 before being named the chair of the accounting department in UCA’s College of Business in 2015.

Alumni Awards Dinner

Three UCA graduates were honored during the 2022 Alumni Awards celebration on Oct. 28. Ann Burns Hoy ’62 received the Alumni Service Award, while Monica Steinberg ’04 received the Young Alumni Award. Two-time alumnus Kim Crissler ’84, ’95 received the inaugural Volunteer of the Year Award.

Half Century Club

The UCA Alumni Association inducted the Class of 1972 into the Half-Century Club on Oct. 29. The annual tradition recognizes alumni who are celebrating their 50th anniversary of graduating from UCA. Alumni enjoyed brunch and shared memories in Buffalo Alumni Hall over Homecoming Weekend.

Scholarship Reception

Nearly 375 people recently gathered to celebrate the spirit of philanthropy at UCA’s annual scholarship reception hosted by the UCA Foundation on Sept. 29, 2022. With a theme of “Legacy of Success,” the reception celebrated scholarship donors and the impact their gifts have had on both scholarship recipients and the university as a whole.

Homecoming 2022

UCA celebrated its annual Homecoming Week on Oct. 23-29. Students, alumni, faculty and staff gathered to connect, enjoy traditions and make new memories.

UCA Now Campaign President’s Tour

UCA Now: Impact Arkansas and Beyond continued its campaign tour in Fort Smith on March 31, 2022. President Houston Davis told potential supporters about how the $100 million goal will positively impact UCA students and the state of Arkansas. UCA Now is the largest fundraising campaign in school history and focuses on four primary initiatives: success, culture, wellness and excellence. To learn more, visit uca.edu/now.

President’s Society

Members of the President’s Society were invited to a special reception on March 8, 2022 at the Capital Hotel in Little Rock. Membership in the President’s Society is extended to those who contribute $1,000 or more during a calendar year.

Ronnie Williams Student Center

In December, UCA honored longtime executive administrator Ronnie Williams by renaming the campus student center after him. Williams was the first Black person to serve at the executive level at UCA, and his accomplishments stretched beyond the UCA campus including vice-chairman of the Arkansas Educational Television Commission, serving on the Arkansas Community Foundation Board and the Faulkner County Shelter for Abused and Battered Women. A UCA endowed scholarship in his name was announced in 2021.

UCA Embraces the Maker Movement

The UCA Makerspace, powered by the Conductor, is a public-private partnership between Startup Junkie Consulting and UCA. At no cost, students, faculty, staff and community members receive access to a multitude of machines and technology to learn, create and become a part of the maker movement.
