UCA undergraduate students interested in pursuing an experiential learning opportunity in Washington DC this summer are encouraged to consider applying for The Washington Center (TWC) academic internship program (AIP). The early deadline for submitting an application for the summer is February 14, 2024. The regular deadline is March 13, 2024. The AIP consists of three components for which students earn nine UCA credit hours in the summer: (1) Internship – three credit hours; (2) Academic Course – three credit hours; and (3) Career Readiness Programming – three credit hours. For more information regarding the AIP, please contact Dr. Mark Mullenbach, TWC Liaison, at markm@uca.edu.

Griffin Planetarium shows this Friday January 19 and Saturday January 20 at 7:00pm: The one-hour shows this week includes a tour of the current sky, and the full-dome movie “River of Bears”, concerning the study of the Grizzly Bears at the McNeil River Alaska State Game Sanctuary. The planetarium is located in the Conway Corporation Center for the Sciences. Seating starts 10 minutes before show time. Admission is free. Seating limited to the first 94. No admission after the shows begin. No food or drink allowed.

Jen Fawkes, winner of the Phillip McMath Post Publication Book award in fiction in 2023, will read from her work Thursday January 25 at 5:30 pm in Windgate WFPA 167.
Jen Fawkes is the author of Mannequin and Wife (LSU Press), a 2020 Shirley Jackson Award Nominee, winner of the 2023 Phillip H. McMath Post-Publication Book Award, and Foreword INDIES gold medalist. Her collection Tales the Devil Told Me (Press 53) was a Foreword INDIES silver medalist, one of Largehearted Boy’s Favorite Collections of 2021, and a finalist for the 2022 World Fantasy Award for Single-Author Story Collection. Fawkes’ novel Daughter’s of Chaos is forthcoming from Overlook Press/Abrams summer ’24.

Kimberly Cole Luevano fulfills multiple callings in life: clarinet performer, chamber music collaborator, teacher/educator/advisor, university administrator, wife, mom, and daughter, amongst many other roles. With reviews such as “a most skillful artist” (Fanfare Magazine), “breathtaking…” (The Clarinet), “virtuosic tone and technique”(Tampa Bay Times), “exceptionally sensitive and introspective rendition” (The Clarinet), she has presented acclaimed solo and chamber performances, adjudicated, taught at festivals, and presented masterclasses on four continents. Former students have been prize-winners in international competitions and occupy performing, teaching, and music industry positions throughout North America. Currently Professor of Clarinet and Chair of the Division of Instrumental Studies in the College of Music at the University of North Texas, Luevano relishes her work with UNT’s diverse, talented students and colleagues. Luevano joined the UNT faculty in 2011, taught at the Interlochen Arts Camp for nine years, and has served the International Clarinet Association as Pedagogy Chair and coordinator of their High School Competition. With pianist Midori Koga and soprano Lindsay Kesselman, she forms the trio, Haven (www.haventrio.com), and her numerous recordings can be found on most streaming platforms. Luevano plays and endorses Selmer Paris instruments and is a D’Addario and Company Performing Artist.
