November Is Transgender Awareness Month

November is Transgender Awareness month.

UCA has announced the following programs to take place during the month of November:

Trans Form – Thursday, November 13th, at 7 pm, in the Black Box Student Gallery (Schichtl Hall, 1A).

Presented by Rebecca Kling, a transgender artist and educator, this is an exploration of Rebecca’s life as a transgender woman. This production offers an overview of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood as a transgender woman. In addition, Trans Form covers the definitions of common terms, presented in an engaging and entertaining format.

Transgender Day of Remembrance – Wednesday, November 19th, 5:30pm, Philander Smith College, Kendall Atrium. This is being sponsored by the Arkansas Transgender Equality Coalition (ArTEC. The program will include stories from individuals who will share the struggles of transgender people today.

Transgender Day of Remembrance – Friday, November 21st, 7:30 pm, UCA amphitheater. This program is being sponsored by PRISM and the Office of Diversity and community. It will also include speakers.

UCA Pi Sigma Alpha To Sponsor Panel Discussion

The UCA chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national honor society for political science, is sponsoring a panel discussion on the 2014 midterm election outcomes and impacts. The panel will feature UCA professor Dr. Gary Wekkin and Hendrix professor, Dr. Jay Barth.

The event is scheduled for November 11 during X-period. It will take place in Irby 216. All interested persons are welcome.

UCA Hosts “The Wall That Heals” In Commemoration of Veterans Day

In commemoration of Veterans Day, UCA is proud to be a temporary home to The Wall That Heals, which is a traveling half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Museum that allows Americans the opportunity to honor those who served their country during the Vietnam War. This exhibition features a 250-foot replica of the original Vietnam Veterans, which duplicates the D.C. memorial. The Wall allows those who gave their lives to be honored by communities throughout the country. The Wall brings peace, hope, courage and healing to all who view it.

Students, faculty, staff, and the general public are encouraged to attend and to bring their friends and family along. The Wall That Heals will be open to the public 24 hours a day beginning Thursday, October 30, 2014. The wall will remain open until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 2, 2014.

Volunteers are still needed to assist visitors touring the wall, so if you are interested in volunteering, please visit uca.edu/outreach/wall.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial honors the more than three million Americans who served with the U.S. Armed Forces in the Vietnam War. It is the most visited memorial in Washington, D.C., with more than four million visitors each year. Its black granite walls bear the names of the more than 58,000 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. Since its inception in 1996, more than two million people have visited the traveling exhibit. It has made stops in nearly 250 U.S. locales in addition to an April 1999 tour of the Four Provinces of Ireland and a visit to Canada in 2005.

Dr. Travis Langley, Author Of “Batman And Psychology: The Dark And Stormy Knight” To Present At UCA

Slide1 copy Psi Chi International Honor Society and the Psychological Society present Dr. Travis Langley, author of the book “Batman and Psychology: The Dark and Stormy Knight”, which has been described as “a journey behind the mask and into the mind of Gotham City’s Caped Crusader, the Dark Knight who inspires fear in evildoers everywhere.”

Why does this superhero without superpowers fascinate us? What does that fascination say about us? The book gives fresh insights into the complex inner world of Batman and Bruce Wayne, and the life and characters of Gotham City.

This event will be held Mashburn 202 on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. and is free to the general public.

Attendees are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes. Dr. Langley’s book will be available for purchase at this event.

Mormon Feminist Activist To Speak At UCA

Dr. Heather Oson Beal will provide a brief history and an overview of an exciting new activist organization in the U.S. religious landscape —Ordain Women— a group that was founded in March 2013 by a small group of Mormon women whose primary objective is to petition Mormon church leaders to ordain women to the lay priesthood in Mormonism. She will be speaking in the Doyne Health Sciences Center Auditorium Monday, October 27, 2014 at 5:30 p.m.

Heather served on the Planning Committee and then on the Executive Board of Ordain Women before recently stepping down.

She will discuss some of the unique challenges the women (and male allies) of Ordain Women have faced in their first 18 months as they have begun agitating publicly, both in sacred Mormon spaces and in virtual spaces, for gender equality in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (more familiarly, the LDS or Mormon Church), a highly patriarchal, conservative religious tradition. Ordain Women is committed to using thoughtful, faith-affirming, in-person strategic actions to raise attention to their cause.
