UCA Philosophy Professor To Discuss His Latest Publication At Faulkner County Library

On Thursday, October 16, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.jacobheld  the Faulkner County Library will be hosting UCA philosophy professor Dr. Jacob Held. Dr. Held will be discussing his newest book Roald Dahl and Philosophy: A Little Nonsense Now and Then.

For years Dr. Held as been at the forefront of the Philosophy and Popular Culture movement publishing at the intersection of popular culture and academic philosophy, from his early work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and James Bond to his recent foray into children’s literature, including Dr. Seuss and Philosophy (2011) and his most recent book on Roald Dahl.

Joining Dr. Held will be UCA philosophy professors and fellow contributors, Drs. Taine Duncan, Ron Novy, Ben Rider, and Tanya Jeffcoat. Join these professors for a lively discussion of Willy Wonka and colonialism, Charlie’s Epicureanism, Fantastic Mr. Fox and Social Justice, the Witches and Feminism, and much more.

 

UCA Alumna and Conway Artist Receives Award in Delta Exhibition

Jessica Camp, Fall 2013 BFA Studio Art: Painting Emphasis, had work accepted for the 2014 Delta Exhibition at the Arkansas Arts Center.   Camp is a UCA alumna and her work was exhibited in the Baum Gallery.  The work selected was Weeping Lamentation from her BFA Senior Exhibition.  She won an honorable mention award in the 56th annual Delta Exhibition at the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock.

UCA Professor and Students Participate In Model United Nations Event

UCA Professor Dr. Mark Mullenbach, along with students Kayla Close and Katelyn Wilkins, participated in a Model United Nations event at Little Rock Central High School.  Around 50 students and teachers from LRCHS, Mills University Studies H.S., J.A. Fair H.S., Pulaski Academy, and UALR participated in the event, which included sessions on writing position papers, developing resolutions, participating in committees, committee topics, and parliamentary procedures.  Following a luncheon, the students participated in mock sessions of UN committees.

This is just one of a number of activities in the run up to the Model United Nations conference that UCA hosts every November.  High school delegations from all across Arkansas and from as far away as Nashville, TN and the panhandle of Florida attend.  The number of participants routinely exceeds 300.  Next year’s conference will be the 50th annual meeting.

UCA Humanities Fair Presents Public Screening of “The Promised Land”

In connection with the UCA Humanities Fair, UCA Humanities and World Cultures Institute will present a free and open to the public screening of “The Promised Land,” starring Matt Damon. The film will be shown at the Riverdale 10 Theatre in Little Rock. The film will be introduced and Dr. Nicholas S. Brasovan will lead a follow up discussion.

The event starts at 7:00 pm. This program is sponsored in part by a grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council and the National Endowment for Humanities.

UCA To Host 2014 Humanities Fair

On Thursday, November 13 (National Humanities Month), the 2014 Humanities Fair will be held at the Brewer-Hegeman Conference Center at UCA from 9:45 a.m. (registration), with programs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.. The Humanities Fair is supported in part by a grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

It is open to high school students and their teachers to enable students to experience a typical day attending university humanities courses. Students will have their choice of attending sessions conducted by UCA professors in Philosophy, Religious Studies, History, English, Anthropology, African and African American Studies, Geography, Political Science, Latino and Latin American Studies, Asian Studies, and Gender Studies. UCA faculty will make presentations exploring the chosen theme of “Humanities and the Environment.”

Although it is not required, students are encouraged to submit original humanities projects to the Fair’s competition. Awards will be presented to highlight excellence and creativity in the areas of Poetry, Short Story, Essay, or Multimedia Presentation. Student projects based on the theme are welcome, as are projects on other topics.
