Office Of Diversity & Community Hosted First Women’s Tea Time

In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Office of Diversity and Community hosted its first “Women’s Tea Time: A Celebration of Womanhood” on Saturday, March 14, 2015.

The tea was open to UCA faculty, staff, students, and other women in the community. The UCA Presidential Dining Room was the venue for the event.

The event featured guest speaker, Dr. Angela Webster-Smith, associate vice president for Institutional Diversity and a silent auction to support the programming efforts of the Women’s Shelter of Central Arkansas. Guests, who were encouraged to sport their “big hats”, enjoyed enriching conversation with the background music of violinist and UCA student Gustavo Agreda, sampled traditional, delectable tea cuisine, and engaged in competitive bidding during the auction period.

Because of the generous donations of businesses in Central Arkansas and the gracious guests, the event raised $750.00, which was presented to the Women’s Shelter of Central Arkansas in April.

The 2016 Women’s Tea Time will be held on Saturday, March 12 at 11:30 a.m. in the Brewer Hegeman Conference Center.

As before, proceeds for the auction will be used to support an organization that assists girls and women as a part of its mission.

University Challenge Celebrated 10 Years Of Success

The UCA University Challenge took place June 6 through June 10, 2015 in several different classrooms in the Lewis Science Center.

Students who want to be challenged and are entering fourth, fifth, and sixth grade who share an interest in science-based topics may attend UCA Challenge.

This summer program is designed to offer students an exciting, hands-on curriculum. UCA met such an ambitious challenge with hands-on activities guaranteed to promote curiosity and fun.

To celebrate their 10-year anniversary, participants had cake in recognition of another successful year.

UCA Alum Part Of Pluto Spacecraft Team

UCA alum David James was a member of the “Student Dust Counter” team at the University of Colorado-Boulder.

He worked with the physics department in the early 2000s with a revolving team of up to 20 students to create the SDC, which is being used on the New Horizons spacecraft mission to Pluto.

The Venetia Burney Student Dust Counter is an instrument aboard the NASA New Horizons mission to Pluto, launched in 2006.

As it travels to Pluto and beyond, SDC will provide information on the dust that strikes the spacecraft during its fourteen-year journey across the solar system.

These observations will advance our understanding of the origin and evolution of our own solar system, as well as helping scientists study planet formation in dust disks around other stars.

UCA Director of Disability Grievance Procedure Elected VP Of Ark-AHEAD

Arkansas Association on Higher Education and Disability (Ark-AHEAD) is an organization for professionals working with people with disabilities in postsecondary education settings in Arkansas. The person accepting the office of Vice President is committing to a three-year commitment on the Board—serving the first year as Vice President, the second as President and the third as Immediate Past President. Serving on the Board provides a great opportunity to network and provide input into the activities of the organization. UCA’s own Crystal Hill was elected Vice President of Ark-AHEAD this year.

May Move Out Collection Proved Successful

UCA collected 10,425 pounds of goods during the May move out time period. Last year, 6,750 pounds were collected.

Non-perishable food was also collected in partnership with the UCA Food Bank.

In the past two years, UCA students have diverted over 17,000 pounds from the landfill and supported Goodwill’s mission of putting Arkansans to work.

UCA is proud to support Goodwill and to take care of the environment and our community.
