UCA Professor Won First Place In Soho Photo National Competition

Art professor Donna was selected for first place and exhibited work in the 2016 Soho Photo Gallery in the TriBeCa district of Manhattan from July 6, 2016 to July 23, 2016.

Three photos, part of her Sticks and Stones series, were among the 40 works selected for display at the 2016 Soho Photo Gallery National Competition and exhibition.

Elisabeth Biondi juried the exhibit, selecting 40 works from over 1,500 submitted by 196 artists. Biondi is a curator and critic who served as the photo editor for The New Yorker for fifteen years.

Stand Up and Speak Out Carnival Provided Valuable Information To New Students

On August 16th, Housing and Residence Life led the efforts for the 3rd annual Stand Up and Speak Out Carnival, which was held in the Student Center from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Other sponsors included the Counseling Center, Student Wellness and Development, and UCA PD.

The event featured educational carnival games designed to provide information and awareness about Title IX issues including sexual assault, consent, healthy relationships, dating violence and stalking.

Thomas Bruick, with Housing and Residence Life said, “It was our largest turnout to date with over 650 students attending the event. Over 350 students completed four activities. Students were engaged, had fun and left with valuable information.”

Students were required to participate in four out of six activities to receive a free T-shirt with the theme “Do Something.” Students enjoyed cotton candy and snow cones as well.

Reesa Ramsahai, from the Counseling Center coordinated an intimacy activity. She said, “I loved the enthusiasm I saw from students. They were very willing to learn about the five intimacies. I was excited because they were so open to learning and really listening. At the same time they seemed to have fun.”

University offices and organizations provide sexual assault prevention programming throughout the year.

UCA Study Abroad Program Was A Summer Success

UCA had 66 students who studied abroad this summer through five different programs in the following countries: Italy, France, Brazil, Costa Rica and China.

Language Immersion in Costa Rica, 2016: Costa Rica Language Academy

The Spanish Language Immersion program in Costa Rica, led by Dr. Jaime Zambrano every year since 2001, allows students to spend 4 weeks abroad studying Spanish and immersing themselves in the Costa Rican culture. Students have the opportunity to live with host families and typically have the weekends to participate in excursions around the country.

UCA in Paris 2016: Grand Mosque in Paris

Paris has been a popular destination for UCA programs. Students along with professors by Dr. Katelyn Knox (French) and Dr. Taine Duncan (Philosophy) completed a two-week study of Paris and focused on issues of identity. Students visited many of Paris’ major monuments during their stay including the Louvre, Versailles, Sacre Coeur Basilica and the Montmartre Art District.

UCA in Florence is an interdisciplinary study abroad as professors from multiple departments (Psychology, Interior Design and Economics) lead the program. Based out of Florence, students have the opportunity to explore many other cities in Italy while abroad.

CSPA graduate students had the opportunity to travel to one of UCA’s partner universities located in Varginha, Brazil. Dr. Susan Barclay, assistant professor, led students on this comparative study of higher education and student affairs, which included a three-day cultural immersion experience in the Brazilian coastal town of Porto Seguro.

Seven UCA students spent one month in Shanghai studying Mandarin Chinese at East China Normal University. ECNU is one of UCA’s partner university’s also hosts a semester exchange program for students wanting to study for a longer period in China.

College of Education Hosted First Mobile Learning Initiative Launch

The College of Education held the first Mobile Learning Initiative Launch event to on Tuesday, August 16.

At this event, students who will be participating in the new 1:1 iPad initiative in upper level College of Education courses received their iPads and learned how they will be able to transform the classroom through mobile technology.

There were be three launches to accommodate students during Welcome Week and each event started at 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

There was also an additional launch on Thursday, August 18 during x-period.

Nursing Department Sent Students To National Summit

Lacie Pettito, APRN, CPNP was selected by the University of Central Arkansas Nursing Department to attend the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Student Policy Summit. The three day summit was held in Washington, DC in late March.

Program sessions focused on educating students about the federal policy process and nursing’s role in professional advocacy. Students attended congressional visits on Capitol Hill, including Rep. Steve Womack, and had face-to-face meetings with high-level policy makers.

Pettito, a spring 2016 graduate, was the first student to be sponsored by the UCA nursing department. She received her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree as part of the Inaugural DNP class.
