The American Physical Therapy Association Section on Women’s Health Student Special Interest Group just released its first promotional video.
The video was filmed at UCA and features UCA DPT faculty and students, including Dr. Darla Cathcart and second year student Julie Jenner.
The video will be distributed to physical therapy programs across the United States and will be available on the Section on Women’s Health website.

From the department of health sciences, three health education students, Summerlin Criswell, Erin Pace and Julie Yang, won the state Case Study Competition during the Arkansas Society of Public Health (ASOPHE) annual meeting in Little Rock on Friday, September 16.
This win qualified the three students to participate in the Case Study Competition at the national SOPHE meeting in Denver, Colorado in the spring of 2017.
UCA’s Occupational Therapy department collaborated with the Physical Therapy and Exercise & Sport Science on a Falls Awareness, Education, and Prevention Emphasis Week in conjunction with the 9th National Falls Awareness Campaign.
The department has been involved since 2012, but this is the first time it has had an inter-professional emphasis.
National Falls Awareness Day was September 22, 2016, and around 140 students in inter-professional teams traveled to facilities in the central Arkansas region (primarily Faulkner, Pulaski, and surrounding counties) where they made presentations about falls, fall risks, and ways to prevent falls.
The demonstrations were interactive with participants engaging in educational sessions, exercises, and activities (occupations) that helped them learn about falls and fall prevention.
The Division of Outreach and Community Engagement offers a variety of courses. Everything from Hula Hoop Fitness to Genealogy to Wine Making and more is offered to UCA faculty, staff, students and retirees.

Online courses are also offered. Test prep (ACT/SAT, GMAT, GRE, LSAT, Praxis, etc), real estate licensing and courses that provide continuing education units (CEUs) are just a few examples of the online catalog.
The UCA Department of Nursing announced that four UCA Level 3 nursing students were selected for the Central Arkansas Veterans Health Care System, Veterans Affairs Learning Opportunities Residency (VALOR) Program.
The 2016 VALOR recipients are Alexandra Hufford, Christina Rapaal, Taylor Willis and Chloe Wren.
The VALOR program was initiated in the summer of 1990, this program provides opportunities for outstanding BSN students to develop competencies in clinical nursing at an approved VA health care facility. Opportunities for learning include didactic or classroom experiences, competency-based clinical practice with a qualified registered nurse preceptor, and participation in nursing-focused clinical conferences. Students recruited for the program must have completed the final semester or quarter of the junior year in an Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing accredited baccalaureate or generic equivalent nursing program. Students may be appointed on a full or part-time basis during the summer months and may continue during their senior academic year on a part-time basis. The aggregate hours that a student may be funded while in the program is up to 800 hours.
