Play Gives Disabled Adults An Opportunity to Shine

Adults with disabilities will show off their acting talents Nov. 17 in the comedic play, “These are the ACTS of Our Lives.”

“These are the ACTS of Our Lives” is based on day-time soap operas such as General Hospital, The Young and the Restless, As the World Turns, and Days of Our Lives. The show begins at 7 p.m. in the Reynolds Performance Hall.

The play is a part of the “Acting Creates Therapeutic Success,” a Department of Occupational Therapy program that provides an opportunity for adults with developmental disabilities to participate in the performing arts.

Using concepts and basic scenes from common soaps, occupational therapy students and adults have created an entertaining, clever, and hilarious performance.

The A.C.T.S program was created in 1997  to provide a creative outlet where people with disabilities can develop learning skills, nurture independence and self-worth and enhance well being, according Dr. Cathy Acre and Dr. Jennifer Moore of the Department of Occupational Therapy, who created the program.

A.C.T.S. is a collaborative program with VSA Arts and it is the only program of its kind in the nation.
