CONWAY — The University of Central Arkansas’s Digital Filmmaking graduate screening will be held on Saturday, March 30, at the Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall.

The 7:30 p.m. screening, free and open to the public, features thesis films by candidates for the Master of Fine Arts in Digital Filmmaking scheduled to graduate in May. Two films are set for the screening, which should last approximately one hour.

The films include December 1982 by Lyle Arnett of Texarkana, Texas, and The Wheel and the Moon by Chris Paradis of North Little Rock.

“I would say that both films are dramas,” said Dr. Bruce Hutchinson, associate professor and director of graduate studies for the digital filmmaking program. “December 1982 is about a high school student who develops a pen-pal relationship with a high school girl in Beirut, Lebanon. The Wheel and the Moon is about a man who discovers he is going blind and how he deals with that information.”

Graduate students in film must complete two years of coursework and then present their script to a faculty committee in the spring of their second year for approval before beginning their thesis project. This project is the only work they do in their third year of the program in preparation for the screening.

Students participating are required to meet with a faculty committee the following week after the screening to defend their films. They will receive their MFA if they are able to successfully defend the film.

“The MFA screening is a great way for people to see the high quality of films being produced by the UCA Digital Filmmaking program,” Hutchinson said.  “The two films featured this year are thoughtful, well made movies that should appeal to anyone who loves a compelling story.”
