What is it?
Meningitis is an inflammation of the linings of the brain and spinal cord caused by either viruses or bacteria. This is something referred to as spinal meningitis. Bacterial meningitis (Meningococcal) is the most severe from and occurs sporadically throughout the year. Outbreaks tend to occur in later winter and early spring and can be found in school or military settings. A case of Meningitis can be severe and may cause brain damage, hearing loss, mental retardation, and loss of arms or legs, seizures, strokes or death.
Some common symptoms of meningitis are high fever, headache, fatigue, and stiff neck. Symptoms can occur over several hours or even 1 to 2 days after exposure. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, confusion, sleepiness and discomfort looking into bright lights.
Bacterial meningitis is contagious. Meningococcal bacteria are spread through respiratory and throat secretions, as with coughing and kissing. College students are at a slightly higher risk for contracting meningitis for several reasons. Students who live in dorms are in close contact with each other. Also, college students tend to engage in risky behaviors, such as kissing, sharing eating utensils, sharing foods, drinks, and cigarettes.
How to avoid contracting Meningitis
Help avoid the spread of meningitis – cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Dispose of your own tissues. Don’t share drinks, foods, or eating utensils with others. Maximize your body’s own immune system response by eating a well balanced diet, getting adequate sleep, appropriate exercise, and avoiding excessive stress. There is a vaccine available that is about 75-80% effective against 4 of the 5 strains of bacterial meningitis. Remember, meningitis can be life threatening. Take steps to avoid contracting this potentially deadly disease.
