Fostering a Collegial and Civil Department and University:
Strategies for Success
Back by popular demand, NCAD is happy to have Bob Cipriano back to host its pre-conference workshop.
Workshop Description:
Incivility and lack of collegiality are on the rise in institutions of higher education. This phenomenon can range from disputes and tension at one end to violence at the other.
There are many departments that suffer from non-collegial, uncivil, and nasty encounters between faculty members, faculty members and staff, faculty members and students, and faculty members and the administration. One non-collegial and toxic faculty member can ruin departments.
This highly participatory workshop will focus on proven methods and strategies to stop the non-collegial behavior and afford departments the opportunity to flourish in a non-threatening environment. Participants will:
- Gain a thorough understanding of what collegiality is — and what it is not.
- Obtain knowledge of how collegiality can be harmoniously and seamlessly used to facilitate a civil department and university.
- Review the roles of students, faculty members, professional staff and administrators in fostering collegiality in their department.
- Become knowledgeable about what the US courts have ruled about collegiality.
- Develop strategies to employ when dealing with an uncivil faculty member.
